The evolution of the argument regarding the infinity or finiteness of space is traced from the cosmology of Aristotle and Eudoxus, appearing in scholastic philosophy of the Middle Ages and reflected in the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, through the conceptions of Newton and Leibniz, the antinomy of space embraced by Kant, and Einstein's relativistic universe. The relationship between Kant's thesis of the antinomy of space and the notion of a finite homogeneous galactic system inherent in Einstein's theory of relativity is explored. The analogy between the curvature of a surface, an intrinsic property giving rise to the distortion of distances on a map, and curvature of space, the map of which is the general theory of relativity, is explored
