The idea is developed that the Crab pulsar is a component of a binary system with a large orbital eccentricity. The orbital parameters are estimated from the braking index (change due to the Doppler effect) of neutron star rotation. A similar model is proposed for explaining flaring X-ray sources such as GX-333 + 25 (Cen XR-4). The influence of precession on the experimental braking index of neutron star rotation is considered.
