The cosmological term (Lambda) is assumed to be variable and is added to the Brand-Dicke Lagrangian. An attempt is made to understand the meaning of the term and to relate it to the mass of the universe. The Dirac large-number hypothesis is also touched upon by employing the results obtained from the application of the present theory to a uniform cosmological model.
