The isotopic compositions of primary cosmic ray boron and carbon in the energy interval 135 to 390 MeV/N were studied using photometric measurements obtained from tasks found in an Ilford G5 emulsion stack exposed to the radiation. The boron measurement is the first that has been made with nuclear emulsions. The carbon measurement makes it possible to substantially improve the statistical accuracy in the determination of 13 C abundance as compared to earlier emulsion measurements. The mass determinations are based on measurements of the relation between track with and residual range with a high precision nuclear track photometer. The method of measurement is briefly described with special emphasis on the errors which arise in this kind of measurement. Preliminary isotopic ratios obtained in this investigation are reported.
