The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) is a moderate resolution, high sensitivity ultraviolet spectrograph to be installed in the Hubble Space Telscope on servicing mission 4. COS operates from 1150 - 3200 A with a spectral resolution of 20,000. Low dispersion modes are also available. The significant increase in effective area provided by COS will enable the efficieient observation of numerous extra-galactic lines of sight, probing the structure, composition and evolution of the intergalactic medium. It will also enable the study of heavily reddened environments previously inaccessible to ultraviolet observations. The operating modes and performance capabilities are summarized. The latest results from component level testing will also be presented.
