Attention is drawn to a numerical coincidence which relates the cosmic radiant energy density, in the form of the cosmic microwave background, to microphysical constants (h, c, me, mp) and the Hubble time. A conjecture is made to explain the coincidence which involves the decay, on the gravitational time scale, of hypothetical particles in a steady-state cosmological model.
