Vertical-sounding data obtained at the midlatitude Irkutsk station were used to study the degree of correlation between the critical frequency of the F2 layer and variations of the degree of the development of the F1 layer in the case of day-to-day variations. The results indicate the existence of variations of thermospheric gas composition in the form of wavelike variations with a time scale characteristic of planetary waves. These variations lead to variations of the degree of the development of the F1 layer and electron density in the F2 layer. It is noted that the prediction of such wavelike disturbances is important in the study of ionospheric phenomena and radio propagation in the ionosphere.
