For a polarimeter employing a continuously rotating half-wave plate positioned in front of a polarizer it is shown that the presence of noise introduces a correlation between simultaneous measurements of the normalised Stokes parameters q and u. Using a particular measurement procedure which integrates over specific parts of the modulated intensity, and the application of photon counting techniques, a mathematical expression for the correlation is derived in terms of polarization, signal strength, photon shot noise and scintillation noise. It is also shown that the projected confidence regions for the true normalised Stokes parameters on the q - u plane are different for uncorrelated and correlated measurements, the correlated regions generally being rotated and increased in size relative to the uncorrelated situation.
