Sir Norman Lockyer is well known as an astronomer, and particularly as one of the foremost solar physicists of the latter part of the nineteenth century. Comparatively little recognition has, however, been given to the significant contributions which he and his son, Dr. W. J. S. Lockyer, made to meteorology. Norman Lockyer's interest in meteorology was first aroused by the possibility of a connection between the 11-year solar cycle and terrestrial events. He saw clearly, at a time when there was no professional weather forecasting, that a scientifically based meteorology could be put to a worthwhile, and indeed humanitarian, use in helping to forecast, and therefore prepare for, famines associated with failure of the Indian monsoon. He saw the need for a world-wide weather-data gathering system; through the International Meteorological Committee he brought this into being.
