Scientific paper
The investigations of the bolometric light curve of SN 1987A are briefly reviewed. The accretion luminosity generated by the accretion of matter ejected at velocities below the escape velocity by an assumed neutron star at the centre of the supernova SN 1987A will contribute importantly to the bolometric evolution at the later stage. Unlike previous accretion models, the authors' model is directly inspired by the shape of the observed line profile, depends little on specific explosion models, and considers an accretion that goes on for a long time, and not just a few seconds. For an assumed compact object with a mass of 1.4 Msun and radius 106cm, the model calculation fits the observed light curve well. This in turn supports the assumption of the presence of a central neutron star.
