HST images and long-slit spectra of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 suggest that there is an intimate connection between the fueling flows in the form of nuclear dust lanes and the outflows of ionized gas in the narrow-line region (NLR) of this AGN. In particular, we find evidence that the outflows are due to in situ acceleration, where clouds are driven off the original fueling flow by radiation pressure and/or entrainment in a highly-ionized wind. This would explain the S-shaped NLR in Mrk 3, although an alternative explanation is that the outflow has a strong component of rotation. We can resolve this issue and probe the connection between fueling flows and outflows in AGN by using NIFS on Gemini North to obtain kinematic maps of the ionized gas and molecular gas.
