Sherpa is the general modeling and fitting application developed for the Chandra Interactive Analysis of Observations (CIAO) package. It provides a flexible environment for modeling a variety of Chandra data (spectra, images, time series) as well as data from other missions. It also allows for modeling multi-frequency data simultaneously (e.g. spectral energy distributions using X-ray, optical and radio data; optical images with point spread functions; X-ray and optical spectra; and so on). Sherpa contains a set of robust optimization methods that can be used for the forward fitting technique, so parameterized models are fit by minimization of the statistic that describes the differences between the data and the model. It also provides several methods for estimating confidence limits for the best fit parameters. Confidence limits describe statistically valid parameter ranges for a given model applied to the data and are necessary for the final statistical evaluation of the results. However, finding confidence limits in a non-linear multi-parameter space often encountered in real data modeling is a non-trivial problem. This paper describes the newly developed algorithm for estimating the confidence intervals used in Sherpa. An analysis of the algorithm's superlinear convergence rate is given. We also illustrate the algorithm application with a few examples. Support of the development of Sherpa is provided by National Aeronautics and Space Administration through the Chandra X-ray Center, which is operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory for and on behalf of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration contract NAS8-03060.
