It is shown that the classical form of the Dst variation of a
geomagnetic disturbance with a deep main phase requires sufficiently
large values of the southern (B sub ZS) component of the IMF. Weaker,
truncated form of the Dst variation arise in the case of relatively
small values of B sub ZS.
