Information obtained since 1985 from ground based observations in the near infrared and in the millimeter range and the reanalysis of Voyager 1 Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer (IRIS) data are discussed. A substantial improvement of knowledge of the composition of the Titan's atmosphere was acquired. Progress is expected from ground based observations and Earth orbit observatories before the arrival of Cassini to the Saturn System.
