The probable pattern of crystallization and sublimation of matter in the seasonal Martian polar caps is studied on the basis of an analysis of the phase diagram of the H2O-CO2 system. It is shown that in the case of a quasi-equilibrium process, each of the fully developed polar caps (during winter, in the corresponding hemisphere) should exhibit a concentric zonal structure, consisting of an edge region of H2O ice, followed by a region of CO2, 6H2O clathrate compound, and regions of stable coexistence of H2O and CO2 ice, in the central portion of the cap.
