Possible changes in the chemical composition of seawater during the Phanerozoic period were investigated by analyzing 49 brine inclusions in halite from the Ochoan Salado Formation in the Delaware Basin and 15 inclusions in halite from the Leonardian Wellington Formation in the Kansas Basin. Data obtained are consistent with the mineralogy of Permian marine evaporites (although they disagree with other geologic lines of evidence) and show very clearly that the composition of Permian seawater was very similar to that of modern seawater.
