One method of investigating the interaction mechanisms between the solar wind and the terrestrial magnetosphere is to study the composition of precipitating ions in auroras. Several examples of at least two different types of ion events were observed. One type consisted of bursts of H(+) and a large component of O(+), apparently of local origin. A second type of event consisted of bursts of H(+), no O(+), and an enhancement of He(++) counting rates. The dispersion in time of the energy spectrum was consistent with an injection and acceleration site located at about 20 Re from the earth. The mechanism producing the above event may also have generated low frequency plasma waves, creating wave-particle interactions which we observed as three periodic spikes in the ion counting rates.
