The 18 comets discovered or reencountered during 1978 are discussed. Of the comets observed, 12 were periodic (Wild 2, Tritton, Tsuchinshan 1, Clark, Giacobini-Zinner, Shajn-Schaldach, Haneda-Campos, Giclas, Denning-Fujikawa, Tsuchinshan 2, Jackson-Neujmin and Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak), and four of those (Wild 2, Tritton, Haneda-Campos and Giclas) were observed for the first time. Of the six nonperiodic comets (West, Bradfield (1978c), Meier, Machholz, Seargent, and Bradfield (1978o)) discovered, four were observed to follow parabolic trajectories and the other two were hyperbolic. The observational conditions at the sightings of the comets are presented, and observations of the periodic comet Ashbrook-Jackson, discovered in 1977, during 1978 are also noted.
