The evolutionary population synthesis model of Arimoto and Yoshii (1986) is used to investigate the chemical and photometric evolution of galactic disks which form by prolonged infall of halo material on a timescale that increases with radius (biased infall). It is found that the decline in the mean age and metallicity of the stellar population with radius generates significant color gradients in the disk. The model is applied to M 31, in which strong radial color gradients were observed. It is found that the chemical and photometric properties of M 31 can be largely accounted for if its disk formed on a timescale that increased from 0.7 Gyr at the center to 5 Gyr at a radius of 10 kpc.
