Scientific paper
This paper reviews the recent progress of one particular theory for the origin and evolution of structure in the universe, the so-called cold dark matter theory. Cosmological nucleosynthesis and inflation are discussed. These theories give definite predictions for the material content and curvature of the universe, suggesting the existence of nonbaryonic dark matter. In addition, inflation predicts the properties of fluctuations which arise during the early evolution of the universe. The cold dark matter theory is well specified, and it is possible to calculate many of its predictions in detail, e.g., how galaxies should form and cluster. These topics are also reviewed.
