A method for classifying stellar spectral types based on the statistical moments of objective prism images is described. The results of testing the method on microdensitometer scans of objective prism spectra is given and their significance discussed. Some of the image moments offer a possible way of assigning quantitative spectral classes to large numbers of stars in a short period of time.
