A photometric and spectroscopic study of the chemically peculiar star HD 37808 is presented. On the basis of uvby photometry of the period of light variability has been improved to the value 1.09909 +/- 0.00003 d. Near infrared photometry shows that light variations with the same period are present up to 2.2 micrometers. From high resolution spectroscopy in the 482-513 nm region the effective temperature, the gravity (by matching the hydrogen beta line profile) and the abundances of some elements are estimated. Equivalent line width variations of silicon, chromium, and iron are also studied, and their phase relation with the near infrared variations is established. As to HD 37808, line blocking as a possible origin of the infrared variations is ruled out.
