The spatial positions of the intensity maxima of H, He, C, and O ions with energies exceeding 1 MeV are correlated with computational results that take account of radial particle drift under the effect of sudden disturbances and ionization losses. The effect of charge exchange on the formation of the intensity maxima of these ions is investigated, and attention is given to ion charge state in the region of the intensity maxima. An adiabatic criterion of particle motion makes it possible to analyze the positions of the outer edges of the radiation belts of heavy ions as well as to determine the charge states of He, C, and O ions.
