The effect of the 1240-A N V line on the 1216-A Ly-alpha line in the spectra of Cerenkov radiation from clouds of atoms and atomic ions is investigated theoretically, and the results are applied to the observed spectra of QSOs. The QSO (Ly-alpha)/(N V) intensity ratio predicted by the Cerenkov model of You and Cheng (1980) is shown to be consistent with observational data for UM 663 but significantly greater than that predicted by photoionization models such as that of MacAlpine (Cariotti et al., 1979).
