A survey is conducted of current observational and theoretical efforts to account for the factor-of-10-to-100 (or more) of mass that is not visible to telescopic observation of galaxies, but which is inferrable from the determined speeds of star rotations. The major candidates suggested to account for this unobservable mass are massive compact (galactic) halo objects, for which major observational campaigns are currently being devised, and weakly-interacting massive particles produced at the time of the big bang, whose detection requires the creation of novel sensors.
