We consider a model of the cosmic ray (CR) source in which the nuclear composition and spectrum of the UHE CR are formed by photonuclear and photopion reactions on soft photons nearby the source. The propagation of nuclei through photon field in the source region is analyzed in order to obtain gamma-ray energy spectra from the above processes. Approximate formulae for gamma-ray energy spectra, which could be useful in the analysis of VHE gamma rays from cosmic sources, have been obtained. It is shown that sources of the UHE CR might be whether effective sources of VHE gamma rays or HE gamma rays (<100 GeV).
