The C-14(alpha, gamma)O-18 reaction rate is estimated for temperatures important for He flashes in white dwarfs and for nonhomogeneous big-bang nucleosynthesis. If available, the resonant contributions to the rate are derived using recent experimental data. The direct capture rate is evaluated on the basis of a microscopic multichannel calculation of the C-14(alpha, gamma)O-18 reaction. Possible interference contributions are discussed. The present rate is compared to previous estimates of Hashimoto et al. (1986) and of Buchmann et al. (1988).
