Extensive monitoring of Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 with IUE yielded information on the absorption line region in the active galactic nucleus. The absorption spectrum and variability data suggest a model with large numbers of absorbing clouds that are almost optically thin. Column denstiy of absorbers N(H), as derived from ultraviolet C and Si lines, is at least 10 to the 21st power/sqcm. Information on space densities (including metastable level populations), on the ranges of emission region velocities that are covered by absorbers, and the lack of observable time lags in absorbers' response to continuum flux changes, together indicate that most absorption occurs in a thin shell in the outermost parts of the Broad Line Region.
