Comets: Brightness, Cometary Tails

Scientific paper

The author's most recent analysis of the brightness evolution of comet Hyakutake is reported for the period from February to June 1996. The comet at perigee reached 0m4. However, the heliocentric magnitude shows a significant hump around perigee. By now it is not clear, whether this hump is caused by methodological effects or by a state of high activity, as implied by spectroscopic observations showing high gas production rates on those days. The author prefers the second option, which would mean, that the maximum brightness at perigee was 0m0. The author also discusses tail length observations.
