We rigorously construct and control a generic class of spatially homogeneous
(Bianchi VIII and Bianchi IX) vacuum spacetimes that exhibit the oscillatory
BKL phenomenology. We investigate the causal structure of these spacetimes and
show that there is a "particle horizon".
