Tom Phillips had a large part in developing SIS (Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor) receivers as a vital piece of his vision to take astronomy into the rich submillimeter area. The theoretical foundation for quantum mixers, and the laboratory experiments that lead to the successful development of working receivers, occurred in parallel for the first five years of 1973-78 without any cross fertilization. Suddenly in 1979, three research efforts that started from InSb bolometers, Josephson mixers, and super-Schottky diodes came together to start a SIS revolution far beyond the classical limits.
