The All Sky Monitor carried on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer continues to obtain orbitally-sampled photometry of the multi-period X-ray binary Hercules X-1. Combined with the CGRO BATSE archive, this provides an uninterrupted sequence of data spanning 15 years. Every few years, the 35 day accretion disk precession cycle is punctuated by deep, anomalous low states during which both the precession period and accretion rate switch state. We show that the anomalous low state of 2004 and the subsequent state of the accretion disk match the predictions made at the time. The engine behind this state-switching is somewhere within the complex feedback system of accretion and irradiation, but we offer one elegant scenario which would suggest culpability belongs to the companion star.
