Beagle 2 is a 30kg exobiological lander for Mars, launching in 2003 as part of the ESA Mars Express mission. The expected lifetime on the surface is 180 Martian days, with an equatorial landing site. One of the instruments on board is a suite of sensors designed to monitor the local environment, to aid in the determination of whether life did, or still can exist there. It will also obtain valuable ground reference data on the meteorological environment throughout the mission to aid in global climate modelling. The design of the suite is strongly influenced by mass limitations and as such consists primarily of microtechnology sensors, with seven sensor subsystems weighing 160 grams. A meteorological package will record wind speed and direction, and atmospheric pressure and temperature; a life environment subsystem will measure the surface UV flux between 200-400nm, and qualitatively measure the effects of atmospheric and surface oxidants. Additional sensors will record dust impact rates, and the upper atmosphere density profile (determined by the acceleration encountered during probe entry and descent).
