Least squares calculations are performed to investigate the best fitting models and to place constraints on parameter values, in the present analysis of star count data in 15 fields of the Basel Palomar-Schmidt-based high latitude survey employing a large number of parameterized two-component models of the Galaxy, where these consist of an exponential disk and an oblate spheroid halo. This approach interprets the data in terms of luminosity functions for kinematically distinct disk and halo populations, thereby avoiding the difficulties involved in earlier analyses of the same data. In addition, improved transformations have been used in the conversion of the computed star counts from UBV to the photographic RGU system, taking into account previously unrecognized color equations existing in the Basel data. The best models reproduce observations to an accuracy of better than about 15 percent for most fields.
