More than 250 determinations of barium concentration in sea water have been made using a neutron activation technique. In addition to observations on all the oceans, intensive studies in the Long Island Sound and east Pacific sector of the Antarctic Ocean were made. The results indicate that there is no universal correlation between the distribution of barium in oceanic profile and the concentration in deep-sea sediments. Correlation of barium with radium distribution in ocean water appears to exist in the Caribbean but is doubtful in the east Pacific. The data are not sufficient to establish unequivocally the relationship of radium to barium. The major feature of the oceanic barium distribution is its narrow dispersion of concentrations. Barium is not removed in any significant manner in near-shore areas. The main deposits are in the deep-sea sediments, probably as barite, although all the various sources and paths of barium in the oceans are not yet clearly defined.
