The paper presents an investigation of the motion fields in the outer atmospheres of a few well-studied supergiants and hypergiants for which good observational information is available from spectral studies. The following topics are examined: the existence of pressure and gravity waves; the dissipation of gravity-wave energy by radiative damping; the reduction of the radiative damping of gravity waves by layer curvature; the large-scale motion of two moderate supergiants (Alpha Per and 41 Cyg); pressure waves and their transformation into shock waves; weak shock dissipation of wave energy; the spectrum of shock-wave energy; and the gravity wave and shock wave components of motion in supergiants and hypergiants.
