The principles and practical method of the application of Kalman filtering in data processing of VLBI astrometry and geodesy are investigated. Based on the software systems SOLVK and CALC a whole system of software for VLBI has been established at the SUN station of Nanjing University (named as NUVP). A number of parameters of astronomy and geodynamics can be calculated by using NUVP. The precisions (mean square errors) of the calculated quantities are: (1) the time delay and its rate are 15.6 ps and 0.1692 ps/s, respectively; (2) the lengths of 6 baselines among 4 VLBI observatories on different plates are less than 3 mm; (3) the EOP parameters (in 1994), i.e. x, y, UT1, dψ and dɛ are 0.11 mas, 0.09 mas, 0.005 mas, 0.19 mas and 0.08 mas, respectively. (4) The right ascensions and declinations of 28 fundamental radio sources are 0.02 ms and 0.18 mas, respectively.
