The paper outlines optical principles, techniques, precautions, and applications in testing astronomical optical surfaces by means of an interferometer using a He-Ne laser as the light source. The instrument is used primarily for examining convergent spherical wave surfaces with aperture ratios up to 1:3, and is well suited for direct testing of aluminized and nonaluminized concave mirrors of any aperture ratio. In combination with additional mirrors, the device helps test flat mirrors, various aspherical mirrors used in astronomical telescopes, homogeneity of medium, quality of optical systems, optical axis alignment, and assembly distortions. The interferometer can be also used to determine the wave surface nonuniformities of an objective with the laser wavelength (6328 A) presently used and to measure some aberrations.
