Preliminary results of a model for pulsar slowdown are presented. The model is the standard magnetosphere model modified in two essential respects: a current-regulating net charge distributed on the star and the magnetosphere is included and the back current is allowed to flow asymmetrically about the outgoing current. It is shown that such a 'bipolar' current exerts a much larger torque on the neutron star than a 'monopolar' or symmetric current does. An isolated pulsar is predicted to slow down while an accreting one is expected to speed up. Older stars for which plasma effects are less important, should have a braking index of three or more.
