With the case of any orientations of optical axis in uniaxial crystal, the versatile and precise formula of the phase difference for a birefringent plate is derived by means of Huygens principle. A simple discussion is carried out by combining several special familiar cases and consistently relevant results are obtained, which reveals that the obtained universal calculation formula is exactly correct. The corresponding approximate formula is presented for the birefingent plate with small calibration error of optical axis and further analysis on the effect of the calibration error of optical axis on the field of the wide-field birefringent filter shows that the proper calibration error of optical axis can extend the field of view for some azimuthal position.
