The mean electromotive and ponderomotive forces generated by random Alfvén waves propagating along the vertical magnetic field in a stratified atmosphere are evaluated using the simple, two-layer model of the solar atmosphere. It is shown that the α-effect can exist due to the stratification of the medium even if the magnetic diffusivity is zero and that the α-effect in the chromosphere is a possible acceleration mechanism of solar cosmic rays.
