Consequences are discussed for the hypothesis that more than 50% of contact binaries are formed by a fission process of the Jeans-Roxburgh type. Some arguments are presented which support the hypothesis of the fission process from W UMa stars which are members of galactic clusters. The problem of alignment of the axes of rotation in young galactic clusters is examined, and the detectability of W UMa stars is discussed. It is concluded that stars of young clusters generally have a preferential orientation of their rotation axes, which need not coincide with the general orientation of the galactic disk.
