In previous papers it has been shown that dynamically stable strong magnetic fields in stellar interiors must have mixed poloidal/toroidal character. It is now shown that such stable fields probably diffuse into unstable configurations in a time which is less than a stellar main-sequence lifetime. This indicates that it is less likely than was previously thought that strong internal fields will survive the main-sequence lifetime of a star.
