The adding method and the doubling method are addressed, accounting fully for the state of polarization. A supermatrix for the numerical evaluation of the combinations of an integration and a matrix multiplication (as they occur in the adding scheme) is introduced, and the eigenvalue problem related to the repeated reflections of light at the interface of the two layers involved in the adding process is investigated using the supermatrix concept. A method to compute the internal radiation field at the interfaces of a multilayered atmosphere from intermediate adding results is presented. Conditions for the initialization of the doubling process which restrict the errors in the final results to a specified value are obtained using an approximate method.
