We are conducting a major (100 primary + 100 parallel orbits) Cycle 11 HST program to obtain multi-color, ACS imaging of 100 early- type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. In terms of depth, uniformity, spatial resolution, and age/metallicity sensitivity, this will be the most comprehensive imaging survey yet undertaken for early-type galaxies and their associated globular cluster systems. Analysis of the ACS data with our own Monte-Carlo and N-body software will yield the most probable merger history of each galaxy, provided that we know the total gravitating mass and the mass of the central black hole for each galaxy. Both parameters can be obtained efficiently from ground-based spectroscopy, and we propose to use the KPNO 2.1m and KPNO 4m telescopes to obtain long-slit spectra for the 69 brightest galaxies in our sample. This dataset will yield accurate velocity dispersion profiles, homogeneous ages and metallicities for the program galaxies, and allow the first systematic comparison of star formation and chemical enrichment histories deduced from the galaxies themselves with those derived from their globular cluster systems. Given the enormous potential of this dataset, we will disseminate all data and science products from both the ACS and ground-based programs through the project website. In particular, we will make available to the broader community the raw and reduced spectra, velocity dispersion profiles and line index measurements.
