The mechanism for the acceleration of particles at the front of a shock wave is discussed, with consideration given to the dispersion of particles ahead of the front. For the special law governing the motion of the shock, a nonstationary function for the distribution of particles on the basis of momentum is found. Conditions are identified under which the effect of the spherical front on the index of the universal power spectrum of accelerated particles is small. A law is given for the increase in the maximum momentum of the particles with time. The possibility of cosmic ray acceleration in supernova shells is discussed.
