The near-IR spectra (990-1100 nm) of 8 symbiotic stars of type S are presented including the long-period binaries VV Cep and KQ Pup. Besides the M-star absorptions, this spectral region also includes strong lines of H I, He I, He II, and Fe II, which are expected to be prominent in emission in symbiotic stars, and can be used for a diagnostics of the physical condition of their emitting regions. The He II 1012.3-nm line is found in emission in the high excitation objects Z And and AG Peg. The fluorescence Fe II 999.7 emission is identified in the low-excitation symbiotics BF Cyg and AX Per. He I 1083 is present in emission in most symbiotic stars. It is also probably present in BF Cyg and AX Per. AP Cygni profile is found in EG And possibly associated with the not component wind.
