Many models of barred galaxies have periodic orbits that become more elongated along the bar as one approaches the 4/1 resonance, eventually developing loops at their ends. In some models, however, the opposite effect is observed, namely the orbits become more circular and then almost rectangular with two sides parallel to the bar. In all cases the characteristic of the central family of periodic orbits (that represents the circular orbits of the axisymmetric case) forms a gap at the 4/1 resonance. However, the form of the gap is different in the two types of models. The author explains theoretically this difference, which is due to the non-linear effects near the 4/1 resonance. This theory has been applied to a particular set of models and a very good numerical agreement with the empirical results has been found, as regards the transition between the two types of behaviour.
