Scientific paper

The 340-d periodicity in the orbital residuals of the visual estimates
of beta Lyrae by M. Luizet, between 1898 and 1916, is shown not to be an
artefact, thus suggesting interference between this periodicity and the
practically commensurable period of 283.4d and, in conjunction with
recent photometry, allowing much greater cycle counts.
