Photoelectric and both high and low resolution spectroscopic observations of the 1988 decline of R Coronae Borealis have been obtained and analyzed. The photometric data are used to compare the color curves of the present decline with those of previous declines of R Coronae Borealis and also with declines of other R Coronae Borealis stars. Two extreme types of color decline, termed here 'blue' and 'red', are identified. The blue type shows a blueward trend in the (U-B) and (B-V) colors after the star begins to decline in V. The cause of this trend is increased flux in the U, B, and V filter bands relative to the R and I bands. The red type declines show all colors reddening as soon as the V mag declines. It is suggested that the red declines will have no broadband emission in their spectra.
